Blogpost 8- Space and Art

Space and art are two vastly different fields. With other technology, art can make sense, but with space, it seems more far-fetched. However, due to performer Guy Laliberté, it has become more intertwined.
If the name Guy Laliberté sounds familiar it is because he was the one who founded Cirque du Soleil and is a billionaire. In 2009 he went to the International Space Station or the ISS (Foust). He claimed to go because he wanted to reach people through an art perspective and he claims that he is "an artist, not a scientist" (Foust). He claims that it was seeing Apollo 11 that influenced him into deciding to go to space.

Alan Bean, is the opposite, he was an astronaut who then became an artist and creates his art based off things in space. He was the lunar module pilot and the 4th person to walk on the moon. He has at least 50 paintings on the Earth and the Moon (Foust). Rather than studying space, he has taken the time to create paintings. This is interesting as no other artists has been able to paint the earth as they see it. As the famous saying goes, pictures say a 1000 words, these paintings are stories of what he has seen which I find to be fascinating.

In fact, there is a type of art called Space Art. Space art is basically art depicting objects in space like cosmos, comets, galaxies, etc in order to explain space and space travel (iaa.org). This is interesting since people do not really consider space to be a form or art since it is tough for the artist to see it in person like they would see people, landscapes, etc. It is also fascinating, because, this allows others to see how beautiful space is.

  1. In my opinion, space and art have always been intertwined. In fact, most of technology used in space were in one for or another inspired due to art. When I think of space, movies like "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" first come to mind, along with books by Arthur C. Clarke and lastly, the glow in the dark stars I used to have when I was younger. Hence, to me space has always been a medium in which art thrives in. Ironically, despite being an engineer now, I was first introduced to the concept of space from cartoons and comic books before reading about the science behind it all. Thus, to me space and art have never been separate entities.
